Virginia International, a family-owned Irish Transport and Logistics Company, stands as a shining example of a company committed to reducing its environmental impact while managing operational costs. Their specialization in Transport and Logistics services connecting Ireland, the UK, and various destinations across Europe, including containerized goods worldwide, is matched by their dedication to making a positive difference.
Partnering with South East Energy Agency
Virginia International partnered with the South East Energy Agency, experts in supporting businesses to improve their energy efficiency and carbon reduction efforts. The collaboration began with a comprehensive energy audit and extended to include procurement, warranty checks, and all necessary paperwork. This rigorous approach ensured that their sustainability efforts were not just on paper but translated into real results.
One of the significant achievements of this partnership was the assistance provided by the South East Energy Agency in securing a 30% grant from the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) Community Energy Grant programme. This grant, awarded to Virginia International, amounted to an impressive €34,020, significantly supporting their sustainable initiatives.
Sustainable Transportation Choices
Virginia International’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in their choice of transportation. They have invested in eight Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, with an additional 15 on order. CNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels, offering reduced emissions and environmental benefits. This strategic move aligns with Virginia International’s mission to reduce their carbon footprint in a tangible way.
To support their CNG fleet, a new refuelling station with two compressors was installed at the Virginia Depot in 2020. This expansion naturally increased the electrical load at their facility, prompting a review of their electricity consumption and infrastructure.
Embracing Renewable Energy
In pursuit of a sustainable future, the South East Energy Agency team recommended and oversaw the installation of a 100 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This solar PV system not only helps offset the increased electrical consumption from the refuelling station but also generates clean, renewable energy for the facility.
In addition to the solar PV system, a 22 kW Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger was installed. This charging station serves as a practical solution for employees and encourages the adoption of electric vehicles, promoting eco-friendly commuting options.
Delivering Results
The efforts made by Virginia International in collaboration with the South East Energy Agency have yielded tangible results. Their commitment to sustainability isn’t just about appearances; it’s about making a difference. The annual savings amount to €15,694, and their carbon footprint has been reduced by 29.41 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Virginia International isn’t just delivering goods; they’re delivering on their promise to make a positive impact on the environment for the long term.
