ECOBoost

Advancing MSEs Towards Net Zero through Comprehensive Energy Efficiency Integration

Project Summary

The ECOBoost project addresses the low energy efficiency of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in North-West Europe (NWE), which account for 30 – 40% of the region’s energy consumption. The project promotes regulatory harmonisation and cross-border collaboration, fostering knowledge sharing and a supportive environment for energy efficiency improvements. ECOBoost promotes energy efficiency beyond the partnership by scaling pilot action plans, engaging networks to support MSEs, and addressing geographical disparities.

The Challenges

MSEs face financial, technical, and regulatory barriers that hinder the adoption of energy-saving technologies and meeting the EU’s 32.5% energy efficiency target by 2030. These challenges include high initial costs, limited financing, regulatory complexity, and geographical disparities.

ECOBoost Project Objectives

ECOBoost aims to help MSEs in NWE overcome these barriers by developing an Energy Transition Navigator for at least 90 MSEs across Ireland, Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands. This tool offers tailored energy audits, toolkit for energy-saving solutions, technical assistance, training programs, and business models on a centralised online platform. Other project objectives include:

  • Sharing best practices and lessons learned from these pilot actions to encourage upscaling and replication in other sectors and regions.
  • MSEs, especially in the food and hospitality sectors, will benefit from tailored solutions, improved energy efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
  • Expansion of impact across NWE, ensuring lasting societal benefits and helping the region achieve its energy efficiency goals.

ECOBoost in Southeast Ireland

South East Energy Agency (SEEA) serves a dual role in the ECOBoost project. As Lead Partner, SEEA coordinates transnational activities and oversees project administration, ensuring smooth collaboration. Additionally, SEEA contributes to key Work Packages, develops business models and supports in crafting the Joint Action Strategy tailored to MSEs’ needs.

South East Energy Agency also leads the pilot action to test and implement the Energy Transition Navigator in Ireland, conducts training to upscale MSE staff and develop the collaborative platform for knowledge exchange and ongoing support.

SEEA’s experience in European projects like CAN SMEs and Green4Micro ensures that ECOBoost’s approaches are practical, transferable, and sustainable.

Finally, SEEA provides expertise in financial tools, technical advice, and multiplier strategies, integrating its past experiences to maximise the project’s impact and promote long-term energy efficiency practices among MSEs.
