Kilanerin Ballyfad Community Development Association registered as a Sustainable Energy Community in 2018 and completed an Energy Master Plan in 2019. They completed an energy audit on the Kilanerin Community Centre which was built in 2013 and phase two was completed in 2017. This serves as an invaluable community facility in this rural area providing services such as a café, gym, sports hall, Men’s Shed, youth club and many other community services.

As a Community Centre with a large day time electricity demand there was an increasing need to identify ways in which the centre could produce its own electricity so that it could reduce its operating costs, lower its carbon emissions and progress towards a more sustainable building.

Within 12 months the solar panels have saved €3,300 plus a payment to Kilanerin Community Development Association of €237 for electricity sent to the grid.  The 11.2kW solar PV system has been a very worthwhile investment for the Community Centre
