The Pembroke Hotel is a contemporary 4-star boutique hotel located in the heart of Kilkenny City. Since opening in 2004, the hotel has earned a reputation for excellence in hospitality and guest experience. Committed to environmental stewardship, the hotel is actively working toward becoming carbon neutral.
As energy costs and environmental concerns continued to rise, Pembroke Hotel faced the challenge of maintaining high levels of guest comfort while reducing its carbon footprint and operational expenses. With ageing equipment and inefficient systems, the hotel needed a comprehensive energy upgrade strategy that aligned with its sustainability goals.
Partnering with South East Energy Agency, Pembroke Hotel engaged in a phased energy retrofit plan funded through SEAI Community Energy Grants (CEGs). Each phase focused on replacing outdated infrastructure, integrating smart energy management systems, and transitioning to renewable energy solutions. Key upgrades included air handling systems, induction hobs, smart controls, heat pumps, and insulation improvements.
These upgrades have significantly enhanced the hotel’s operational efficiency, reduced its environmental impact, and elevated the overall guest experience—cementing Pembroke Hotel’s leadership in sustainable hospitality.
Pembroke Hotel’s success in reducing emissions and increasing energy efficiency stands as a strong example of what is achievable through strategic collaboration, expert guidance, and a long-term commitment to sustainability. By investing in impactful upgrades and leveraging grant support, the hotel has set a benchmark for the hospitality industry in Ireland and beyond. Its journey demonstrates that environmental responsibility and business performance can go hand in hand, inspiring others to take similar steps toward a more sustainable future.
